Safai karamcharis and Ghantagadi Workers in Thane There are about 1400 'so called' contract workers working as Safai Karamcharis and Ghantagadi workers in the Solid Waste Management department under Thane Municipal Corporation. Safai and Ghantagadi workers are doing permanent and perennial nature job. Sweepers and Ghantagadi workers are performing statutory duty of Corporation of cleaning, sweeping, and transportation of garbage. Safai workers are doing the same kind of work for more than 12-13 years but still they have not got the status of permanent workers. Workers working under TMC are getting Rs242 per day. Municipal conservancy workers are a neglected section of our working population. The caste system in India has undergone many changes and its manifestations exist in varying degrees in different regions/occupations. Scavenging and Municipal conservancy work is one such occupation where the workforce mainly consist of a dalit community. There is thus a structural basis to the social composition of the conservancy workforce. Irrespective of their regional background conservancy workers belong to the backward classes in an undeniable fact. MANHOLE OR FATALHOLE? What happened? The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been cleaning drains in preparation for the monsoon. For this, the civic body had appointed contractors to thoroughly clean out storm water drains (SWD) and work was going on in full swing across the city. The work is undertaken every year by the BMC to save the city from possible flooding. This year, contractor RPS Mehta was awarded the contract to clean up storm water drains at Kalachowkie. On Thursday, Umakrishnan, Pandian and Anil Londhe, 24, followed the usual procedures, but did not wait long enough. They were asked to enter the drain without any safety equipment like gumboots, hand gloves, masks or oxygen cylinder. The two, Umakrishnan and Pandian, quickly entered the manhole on instruction of the supervisor and this haste proved fatal for them. बॉम्बे हाई कोर्ट के दलित मज़दूरों की व्यथा - BALJEET बॉम्बे high कोर्ट में ६० से अधिक दलित मज़दूर रोजाना साफ़ सफाई का काम करते है। हर जगह की तरह हाई कोर्ट का साफ़ सफाई का काम भी रोजाना नियमित रूप से चलता है परन्तु यहाँ काम करने वाले लोगो का भविष्य केवल एक या दो साल के लिए टिका होता है। मतलब यू की इन लोगो को ठेकेदारो के अन्तर्गत काम करना होता है तथा ठेकेदारो के बदली होने के साथ साथ इन सफाई कामगारों को भी निकाल दिया जाता है। एक अत्यावशयक तथा नियमित रूप से होने वाले काम के कारण सफाईं के काम में कॉन्ट्रैक्ट कामगारों को रखना गैरकानूनी है। परन्तु हाई कोर्ट ने सब कानूनो की धजिया उड़ाते हुए कामगारों को अस्थाई तोर पर रखा हुआ है। केवल इतना ही नहीं ये सभी कामगार कम से कम मिलने वाली सुविधाओ से भी वंचित है। कॉन्ट्रैक्ट कामगारों को मिलने वाली आधी सुविधाये भी इन्हे नहीं मिलती। बाकि सब सुविधाये पाना तो इनके लिए चाँद पर जाने के बराबर है। महिला कामगारों को जहाँ मासिक वेतन ५७०० रुपया मिलता है वही पुरुष कामगारों को ६२०० रुपया मिलता है। उच्चतम न्यायालय के अनुसार महिला तथा पुरुष दोनों को सा...
